For me, the New Year is always marked by a sense of anticipation and excitement. It is like a beautifully wrapped gift from someone you hold dear; you do not know what it contains, but you know it will be spectacular. Much of the pleasure of such a gift comes from the mystery of what is inside, imagining the possibilities, and savoring the thrill of discovery. A brand new year offers much the same – mysteries to reveal, endless possibilities, and countless opportunities for new discoveries.

When I reflect on the gift of 2019, I hope it will contain at least these three items for all of us:
An appreciation for finding joy in the journey – The destination is important, but do not lose sight of the fact that the exploration, collaboration, learning, and growth that occurs along the way may hold the greatest value.
A desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others – In education, we are fortunate because we are in the business of changing lives for the better, but when we have the chance to do something more that will help another feel valued, experience success, or know kindness, let us do it without hesitation.
The knowledge that we have the ability to make this the best year yet – No matter how we feel about yesterday, last week, last month, or last year, we have the ability to make today, tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year better. The future, like the New Year, offers hope, optimism, and promise, if we have the wisdom to embrace it.
As we embark on this brilliant New Year, let us not forget that every day is another opportunity to appreciate the adventure, impact the lives of others, and make it the best year yet.
Here’s hoping 2019 will be your best year yet!
